Anthony Bourdain

RISE and CropLife America are happy to announce the featured guest speaker for our combined annual meeting – celebrated chef, author and TV host ANTHONY BOURDAIN.  Mr. Bourdain will speak at the combined RISE/CLA breakfast on Tuesday, September 26. 

Anthony Bourdain was born in New York City.  He studied at Vassar College and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America before running the kitchens of some well known New York Restaurants.  He is currently executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles with the flagship restaurant in New York and others in Washington, DC and Miami.  In 2000 Mr. Bourdain’s memoir, Kitchen Confidential:  Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, became a huge bestseller in the U.S. and U.K.  In 2002, Food Network broadcast a 22-part series in which Bourdain traveled the world in search of “extreme cuisine.”  The resulting book, A Cook’s Tour:  In Search of the Perfect Meal, became another bestseller and won the 2002 Guild of Food Writers Award for Food Book of the Year.  Les Halles Cookbook was published in 2004 and is Bourdain’s guide to the strategies and techniques of classic bistro cooking.  Mr. Bourdain has also written numerous articles appearing in the New York Times, the Times, The Observer, Scotland on Sunday, The Independent, and other publications.

Biography - David T. Crow

Mr. Crow serves as President of DC Legislative and Regulatory Services (DCLRS), a company he established in 1991. In this capacity, he represents numerous corporations and national trade associations on a range of issues including pesticides, fertilizers, agriculture, irrigation, energy, small business, tax, pension and trade. He helps clients to formulate policy and to develop strategic plans for working with legislative and executive branch officials on critical issues. In addition, he raises money for business-oriented political candidates.

Through his more than 25 years of professional experience working in the political arena, Mr. Crow has developed strong working relationships with influential policymakers including members of Congress, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials and key committee staff members. He played an instrumental role in many key policy decisions shaping the Food Quality Protection Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, biotechnology and food safety, Small Business Job Protection Act, the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2001 and various Farm Bills.

Prior to starting DCLRS, Mr. Crow served as vice president and senior member of the Legislative Division for The Jefferson Group from 1989-1991. In this capacity, he represented clients before Congress and the executive branch. He handled more than 30 accounts in a wide range of industries including biotechnology, pesticide, fertilizer, timber, minerals, chemical, oil, pharmaceutical, defense and other resource areas.

Biography - Dr. Jerome Goddard

Dr. Jerome Goddard served as an Air Force Medical Entomologist for 3 1/2 years before going to the Mississippi State Department of Health where he is the State Medical Entomologist.  He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  Dr. Goddard writes a regular column on medical entomology for an infectious disease journal, and has published over 140 scientific articles, five books, and three book chapters.  One of his books, “Physician’s Guide to Arthropods of Medical Importance” published by CRC Press, is soon to be in its fifth edition and is used by physicians worldwide.  It recently won an award from the British Medical Association in the “Best Medical Book of the Year” competition.

Goddard has been a visiting professor in the Department of Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic, as well as a member of a National Institutes of Health panel convened to study the future of tick taxonomy in the U.S.  In 1999, he testified before Congress on the public health benefits of pesticides.
         

Holding a B.A.E. and Masters in biology from The University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi, Goddard received his Ph.D. in Medical Entomology from Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi.

Biography - Roger S. Nasci, Ph.D.

Dr. Nasci received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Zoology from Ohio University, his Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts, and was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the University of Notre Dame’s Vector Biology Laboratory.  He was an associate professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences at McNeese State University (Lake Charles, Louisiana) prior to joining the CDC.  Currently, he is a research entomologist and Chief of the Arboviral Diseases Branch in the Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  His responsibilities include directing field and laboratory investigations of mosquito-borne arbovirus ecology, and emergency surveillance and control program development.
 
Dr. Nasci has led several of  CDC’s vector-borne disease emergency response programs, including Hurricane Andrew in Florida, the Midwest floods, SLE and EEE outbreaks nationwide, and has been involved with coordinating the nations response to West Nile virus since it was first discovered in New York City in 1999.  He has authored over 80 scientific publications regarding mosquito biology and mosquito-transmitted diseases, has worked extensively on arbovirus surveillance and control programs, and has served as President of the American Mosquito Control Association.

Richard Gaskalla began his career with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in 1976 in Fort Lauderdale as a District Plant Protection Specialist.  After several transfers and promotions, he was appointed to the position of Assistant Director, Division of Plant Industry in 1983 and later Director in 1988.

During the 30 years of employment with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Richard has directed several successful agricultural pest eradication programs, including multiple Mediterranean fruit fly and citrus canker programs. He has an interest in, and is a strong advocate of the protection of Florida agriculture and is often called on by the USDA to assist with agricultural protection issues of national and international importance. Richard and the DPI staff have an excellent working relationship with the FNGLA and Florida’s nursery industry. Issues of importance that DPI and the FNGLA are working on together are Q-37 revisions, Pink Hibiscus Mealybug management strategies, and Sudden Oak Death exclusion.  He has also received many awards, the most recent being the Commissioner’s Distinguished Achievement Award in 2000 and the Florida Citrus Packers John T. Leslie Award of Excellence in 2003.
