3rd International Workshop on Crop Protection Chemistry in Latin America

3rd International Workshop on Crop Protection Chemistry in Latin America

November 9-12 2009

IUPAC has organized its latest regional crop protection chemistry workshop for next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a major emphasis on regulatory harmonization.  This workshop provides a great opportunity for our industry to influence a positive, science-based approach to crop protection regulatory science, and our hope is that leading regulators, researchers, and industry colleagues will take full advantage.  A one-page announcement is appended and full details on the program are available via the website at www.iupacrio2009.org.   Early-bird registration is available via the website through October 18, and on-site registration will be available thereafter.

The workshop has been organized around the theme "Environment, Safety, and Regulation", and series of 36 lectures along with posters and roundtable discussions developed around the main topics listed below:

  • Innovative Chemistry and Technology for Crop Protection
  • Risk Assessment, Regulation, and Global Harmonization
  • Environmental Chemistry and Risk Assessment
  • Pesticide Residues in Food and Trade
  • Education and Information Management in Crop Protection

Examples of lecturers and topics arranged include:

- Jeff Herndon (EPA, USA) Joint evaluations as a mechanism for advancing harmonization
- Jose Otavio Menten (ANDEF, Brazil) Industry supported stewardship and product quality initiatives
- Keith Solomon (Univ. Guelph, Canada) Risk assessment in the regulatory decision-making process
- Bernhard Johnen (CLI, Belgium) Role of international treaties and conventions
- Phil Brindle (BASF, USA) Residues in food, trade, and MRL harmonization
- Elizabeth Carazo (Univ. Costa Rica) Agrochemical information management and e-learning
